How should I use signals?

For 2025-2026, applicants are given 20 signals in ERAS to assign to programs.
Since the number of signals went up, you should also signal your home program and places that you did a sub-I.
Every program utilizes signals differently. Some programs will not review your application without a signal. At other programs, it just confers a bump in the review of your application.
You should make sure that at least some of your signals go to programs that you have a realistic hope of matching at. If you send them all to reaches, you may still not get interviews there and you may lose out on other great programs.
Ask your mentors for advice on programs that are a great fit for you.
